romney just gave an economic speech in ames, iowa at a small construction business that as it turns out received nearly $2 million from obama's stimulus programs. so let's go straight to gloria borgeer who i know is watching the speech. my question number one for you is this. i didn't hear a lot new in the speech. i'm guessing you didn't hear much new in the speech either. so given that fact, isn't it a bit risky, though, to introduce new policy here with 10, 11 days to go? isn't this really about getting voters excited getting out to vote? >> it's about getting independent voters to really take a look at you as somebody who is reasonable. as you said, this is really not about new ideas. this is about a different tone, a different kind of appeal. talking about change. i mean, four years ago. remember, barack obama was the candidate of change. you can't do that when you're the incumbent but it's easy to do when you're the challenger. so you make the case for change. you admit, as mitt romney did, that barack obama was kind of dealt a bad hand, but then you say, you know what? he didn't d

and bayonets. >> governor romney appeared presidential. the president appeared small. >> clearly if you watch this debate, the president looked like the stronger guy. >> there were times where it felt like we went to a foreign policy debate and a domestic policy debate broke out. >> i love teachers, but i want to get our private sector going. >> i think we all love teachers. >>> california some of the worst weather in the country. a couple tornados near the sacramento area. >> i stepped out on my back porch and there kfs. >> apple is expected to take the wraps off a smaller version of the ipad today, half the size of the regular ipad. >> and the giants have won the pennant. >> these guys just never quit. >>> a beluga whale who scientists say was trying to mimic a human voice. >> someone got into my house. >> a 10-year-old stops a burglary inside her own home. >> you did a very good job. >> thank you. >>> that shot says it all. the bears will get win number five on the season. >> are you okay? >> i'm good, i'm good. >>> ahh! >> you've got to stop putting words in my mouth, sir. let me finish.

to the polls, they're going to make the right decision. it will be mitt romney. thank you. host: moving on to elkhart, indiana. dale is on our line for independents. dale is optimistic about the economy. go ahead, dale. caller: hi. how are you? host: i'm doing fine. you say that you're optimistic about the economy. why is that? caller: well, our economy is so big, it's just going to keep going no matter what, even though we came close to falling off of a cliff, we still rebounded no matter the negative or positive attitudes that were out there. we continue to still grow. we need to have more percentage growth. but i just feel it's just going to keep going no matter what our politicians or our big business or anybody does. host: hey, dale, what kind of business are you in? what do you do for a living? caller: i'm a quality technician for aerospace components. host: and based on the things that you've seen and what's happening in your aerospace industry, does that also help fuel your optimism for the economy? caller: yeah, we added quite a few, probably 30%, 40% of people in the last two

romney wasted no time today getting back out on the campaign trail. with election day now only two weeks away, the candidates are devoting every waking minute to revving up the base and courting any remaining undecided voters in a handful of critical swing states. for mr. obama this morning, that meant the campaign rally before an enthusiastic crowd in delray beach, florida, not far from the the site of last night's face-off. >> you guys really are fired up. ifill: picking up where he left off last night he fold voters that governor romney is not a reliable choice. >> we're accustomed to seeing politicians change their positions from like four years ago. we are not accustomed to seeing politicians change their position from four days ago. i mean,... and we joke about romnesia but you know what? this is is important. this is about trust. there is no more serious issue in a presidential campaign than trust. >> ifill: doubling down on that argument vice president joe biden amplified the democrats' message at the university of toledo in ohio before meeting up with the president later in the

on foreign policy. with the race still very tight, both president obama and mitt romney have a lot to gain and a lot to lose in their final joint appearance before a national audience. it might be their last best chance to win over the uncommitted voters who will decide the election, which is now just two weeks away. for tonight's debate, the candidates will be seated together at a table with bob schieffer, anchor of "face the nation." this is the third time bob has moderated the final presidential debate. >> schieffer: good evening from the campus of lynn university here in boca raton, florida. this is the fourth and last debate of the 2012 campaign brought to you by the commission on presidential debates. this one's on foreign policy. i'm bob schieffer of cbs news. the questions are mine and i have not shared them with the candidates or their aides. the audience has taken a vow of silence-- no applause, no reaction of any kind except right now when we welcome president barack obama and governor romney. (cheers and applause) >> good to see you again. >> good to see you. (cheers and applau

romney is, peter, good evening. >> reporter: brian, good evening to you as hurricane sandy takes aim on the east coast, forecasters are not the only ones on alert, the campaign strategists are, as well. with crews defending against potentially devastating flooding in virginia, the campaign cancelled a rally. officials in north carolina say they could suspend early voting, if needed. in ohio, snow threatens to hurt the voting efforts. in iowa today, he was introduced by a situation with the state's senior senator. >> we'll put america on a new path to a new day with a new president. obama. a new president romney, pardon me. >> time for new bold changes that measure up to the moment, that can bring the american families to the certainty that the future will be better than the past. >> reporter: speaking to a construction plant that benefitted from mr. obama's stimulus money help, he blasted the opponent. >> we're the nine million jobs that the president promised. >> reporter: president obama targeted the most loyal supporters without ever leaving washington, courting young voters now o

. [ male announcer ] fedex office. now save 50% on banners. this morning my question. why does mitt romney think marriage solves gun violence? we are women and you will hear us vote. a race talk that asks if talking about race really helps at all. it's a complex world out there. we need someone to lead it. >>> good morning. i'm melissa harris-perry. at approximately 6:15 a.m. eastern time, former u.s. senator george mcgovern passed away while in hospice in sioux falls, south dakota. he was 90 years old. an early opponent of the vietnam war he was, the nominee for president in 1972 for democrats. he lost in a landslide election to republican richard nixon. in a statement, the mcgovern family said "we are blessed to know that our father lived a long, successful and productive life. advocating for the hungry, fighting for peace." mcgovern long will be remembered for his unwavering opposition to war and war is where we begin this morning. today we're taking you back to june 28th, 1914. yes. june 28, 1914. that was the day that a foreign emissary was assassinated while on a diplomatic mission i

governor romney said on the first debate. >> look, i don't have an issue with it. first of all what governor romney essentially is talking about, this is just to clarify, and i'm not going to evade your question, he's saying if china wants to trade we need a level playing field. there isn't a level playing field. t ultimately it is bad for everybody because at some point americans will stop investing in china. and he says he is going to lay on tariffs. so he is saying if you guys want to play this game, we can hurt you just as much as you think you can hurt us. now what will it do to the strategic balance out there which is your question? my guess is that the chinese will push as far as they can as long as there is no pushback. my best example of that is chinese behavior in the last few years in the south china sea where they kept pushing and bullying and to some extent they still are but when the administration, and i give hillary clinton a heck of a lot of credit for this, when she basically got up at the asean conference and made it clear this was going a little too far they back
